Mile End, Stepney, Whitechapel Area Guide

Mile End

Mile End is situated 3.6 miles east of Charing Cross, making up a part of London’s ‘East End’. It takes its name from the fact it’s where the first milestone was placed away from Aldgate. Mile End is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and is home to the main campus of the University Queen Mary. Mile End properties are a mix of Victorian terraces, with some ex-council residences. As with a lot of London, there are some modern apartment blocks. Popular amongst first-time buyers and city workers, Mile End has a diverse range of independent shops, bars and restaurants. With Victoria Park located to the North of Mile End and Mile End Park, residents are spoilt for choice with open spaces to enjoy with plenty of sporting facilities. Mile end benefits from excellent transport connections, taking just 16 minutes to get to Oxford Circus.

Stepney

The home to the Royal London Hospital, Stepney has been through its share of change in the past century. With only a third of original Georgian properties surviving the Blitz, there is an eclectic mix of property defining this E1 postcode. As part of an ongoing borough regeneration, the £220 million regeneration of the Ocean Estate is almost completed offering over 800 new homes. This regeneration has completely lifted Stepney’s profile. This city offers a city farm, with sheep, donkeys, pigs and rabbits; a taste of the country from the inner city (which also hosts a Saturday farmer’s market). With the imminent arrival of the Crossrail, it is set to become a major hub, trains set to take just ten minutes to Bond Street. Stepney’s oldest church, St Dunstan and All Saints (once known as the ‘Church of the High Seas as it has a long, traditional link with the sea), had its wooden structure replaced with stone in AD 952 and is set in the heart of Stepney on the High Street.

Whitechapel

There is a mix of properties, from period house to conversion flats, former council flats to modern warehouses, Whitechapel has a wide variety of choice of property.
