East Ham, Beckton Area Guide

East Ham

East Ham is in the London Borough of Newham and lies 8 miles northeast of Charing Cross. In 2016, a long-awaited Women’s Institute (WI) was founded. It now has over 40 members and is rapidly growing, they meet every second Tuesday of the month. You will find mainly terraced properties on tree-lined avenues here from the Victorian and Edwardian eras as this is when most of the urbanisation happened. If you are lucky enough to have a property on the Central Park Estate, many of the terraces there have views over Central Park, a real perk!

This bustling area attracts those that are in touch with their natural side as there is a vast array of open green spaces here. This includes the East Ham Nature Reserve, home to many animals including lizards, insects and birds. There is a Central Park with tennis courts, basketball hoops and a play area. Brampton Park has a paddling pool, table tennis, trim trail and a multi-use games area. These are but a few of the outdoor areas that East Ham has to offer. Getting around couldn’t be easier as The East Ham tube station has both the District and the Hammersmith and City Line Underground Lines and has a major bus station, with buses taking you to the rest of East London and the City Centre. In close by Beckton, the old Gas Light and Coke Company site has now been transformed into a shopping area (Gallions Reach Shopping Park) which houses over 35 major stores and restaurants so plenty to do in East Ham and its surrounding areas. London City Airport is very close by too so perfect for the weekend trips away!

Beckton

Beckton is in the London Borough of Newham and was the former home to Europe’s biggest gasworks, Beckton Gas Works. It is exceptionally well linked by the DLR for getting to Canary Wharf as it has an astounding 8 stations in and around the surrounding areas. There is a big public park Becton District Park, which has a lake, areas of natural woodland, football pitches and a basketball court, the smaller neighbouring park, New Becton Park, has a grass area with a couple of sports pitches and a play area with sand. Young professionals are attracted by the easy commute into the city and the affordable rates. Gallion’s Reach (which now occupies the gas works former site), as mentioned before has over 35 major stores and restaurants, its own DLR station and housing on the site.
